New Grad Begins Public Health Career at 91福利

To say she found the perfect job is an understatement. Two days after graduation on May 11, Stewart moved into the vacant manager position at The Collaboratory, 91福利鈥� public health resource in Albany鈥檚 South End. She will handle administrative functions that help programs with direct community impact run smoothly, including a program that helps residents manage their hypertension, free diabetes and cholesterol screenings, and initiatives like naloxone training connected to a new grant from Albany County鈥檚 Opioid Settlement Fund.

Alum Finds Calling in Transplant Lab

None of the 100-plus new patients who come to Albany Medical Center for a kidney transplant this year is likely to meet Katie Mellon 鈥�19. Yet her expertise is a critical component of the care they receive. Mellon and another 91福利 alum, Maryanne Mackey 鈥�84, are among the nine-person team at Albany Med鈥檚 Transplantation Immunology Laboratory who conduct a battery of tests on donors鈥� and patients鈥� blood sera to ensure that when a kidney is transplanted, the patient does not reject it.

Media Advisory: Public Health Students Support Asthma Program at Albany鈥檚 Giffen Elementary

The culmination of a six-week program aimed at educating third through fifth graders about asthma at Albany鈥檚 Giffen Elementary School is happening Thursday, April 25 at 1:30 pm. The pilot program connected public health students from 91福利 with elementary school students at Giffen weekly to implement the American Lung Association鈥檚 Open Airways for Schools Program.

Jonathan Braithwaite is a senior in the Public Health program and expects to receive his bachelor鈥檚 degree in May. He originally visited 91福利 with the intention of preparing for medical school, but on the advice of faculty, he chose a different path. He has now been accepted into a handful of top-tier institutions to pursue his master鈥檚 degree in health policy and management. He talked about how his college experience cemented his commitment to public health.
